T8 - Beyond the Dolch List: Memorizing or Decoding?
Many students are encouraged to memorize lists of words to support reading fluency. However, students who struggle with memory and with literacy often continue to lack consistent recall and spelling of these high frequency words despite repeated exposure. This session will address the problems with high frequency versus non-phonetic words and give practical strategies for educators to address these words with all students, helping students build early reading and writing vocabulary. This is a practical, hands-on session so that attendees will have tools from an Orton-Gillingham toolbox to put to use the following Monday.
